
Artistic Director - ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
Location: Columbus, Indiana
Position Details:
● Full-time salaried position with hours varying by season (increased hours during production weeks, tech rehearsals, and performances; reduced hours during summer months)
● Salary: $46,000
● Teaching load: 8-9 classes per week during regular semester
Key Goal:
● Increase student enrollment through program excellence and community visibility
Reports to:
Board of Directors
Supervises: Office Manager, Costume Mistress, all teaching staff (contracted and employed)
Leadership & Management:
● Serve as head of the organization with overall responsibility for studio operations and artistic vision
● Supervise and manage Office Manager, Costume Mistress, and all teaching staff
● Manage teacher schedules and coordinate with all staff members
● Recruit, hire, and onboard new teachers
● Conduct performance evaluations as needed
Artistic & Educational Leadership:
● Teaching 8-9 dance classes per week during regular semester
● Creating level placement and advancement requirements
● Developing class syllabi and curriculum
● Running Saturday rehearsals
● Choreographing shows (working with Nutcracker producer and music director from Columbus Indiana Philharmonic for Nutcracker; managing spring show more independently)
● Judging pointe readiness and student safety decisions
● Parent communication
Program Development:
● Inviting guest teachers for master classes
● Helping students apply to summer intensives at other programs
● Developing and running the studio's own summer intensive
Community Outreach & Mission:
● Working with Office Manager to identify performance opportunities
● Building relationships with local organizations for student performances and community outreach
● Representing the studio in the community
● Collaborating with Columbus Indiana Philharmonic music director
Administrative Responsibilities:
● Submit monthly report to Board of Directors prior to monthly board meeting on the state of the studio, enrollment updates, program developments, and any topics requiring board discussion or decision
● Submit annual budget requests to Board of Directors
● Collaborate with Board on strategic planning and long-term vision for the studio ● Work with Board on policy development and organizational goals
● Attend monthly board meetings and participate in board discussions as requested ● Ensure all programming aligns with studio's nonprofit mission and grant requirements.
Support Structure Available:
● Board of Directors provides governance, strategic guidance, and financial oversight; approves annual budget and supports organizational decision-making
● Office Manager handles daily admin tasks, marketing efforts, grant writing, and helps identify performance opportunities
● Junior Program Director leads the lower level/younger ages dance program ● Costume Mistress coordinates all costume needs
● Nutcracker Producer manages Nutcracker production
Benefits:
○ 2 weeks (10 days) paid time off, to be scheduled during studio breaks (summer, winter holidays, spring break) whenever possible. Time off during teaching periods requires advance notice and may require AD to arrange substitute coverage.
○ 5 paid sick days per year
○ $500-$1,000 annual professional development stipend
